ARES/RACES Drill – Mike KD2NCN
Mike, KD2NCN, presented an excellent plan for a RACES/ARES structured radio exercise based on a flood scenario. The exercise took place Saturday, October 13. Mike laid out the member/station deployment locations (augmenting the footprint of the OEM and first responders). Canned voice messages were transmitted to NCS, Aly – AL0Y on 2M repeater who then retransmitted them to EOC – Mike on the 440 repeater.
Participating in the exercise were Mike KD2NCN (EOC); Aly, AL0Y (NCS); Allan, K2AJB; Joe, K2JVS; Dave, K2NEC; Steve, KD2PJK; Allan, KF2EE; and Carver W2TFM. CERT personnel were also deployed to the same locations as WRAET personnel for exposure to and involvement with radio communications.
Mike, KD2NCN (EOC) had this to say about the completed exercise: I wanted to take a moment to thank all of you that were able to attend today's drill on this rather chilly and wet morning. I believe you all did a great job as a club and as a team in passing simulated emergency messages and learning quickly how to overcome communication difficulties and do your best to make sure your message was copied by net control. It was awesome to see people immediately identify there was not a solid copy and spelling out difficult or broken up words or even making equipment adjustments.
I'd like to also extend a big thank you to Aly for doing a tremendous job managing net control and doing a fine job ensuring that the message was a solid copy. I monitored both repeaters and definitely observed moments where Aly was tasked with monitoring two transmissions on the different bands all while writing down station messages.
I hope during a future drill we can do even better with a little fine tuning, for a first drill I think it went very well.
I likely will not be attending our November meeting, but if anyone has any feedback good or bad please share with the group. This was a learning experience for us all.
Respectfully, Mike Williams
